The London Fashion Doll Festival is being put together with love and care by a team of dedicated collectors who want to give attendees the very best experience they can. We wanted to share some insights into the this process and introduce those in the team who are involved. In this instalment, we will meet Andy Adrei Teican, of ANDYMY DESIGNS, who has been busy designing and creating the 12″ OOAK Centerpiece dolls.
I caught up with Andy recently and asked a few questions about his design process and about his involvement in the Festival.
Could you tell us about your design background
My design background is none. Everything I do, I learned by myself and by watching others doing it. Since I was a kid I liked dolls and fashions, and anime. I started drawing shapes on paper, in time I taught myself how to draw better, I learned how to sew. But the biggest breakthrough in my career came at the moment I decided to work in a garment making factory. Here, I learned everything there is to know about fashion and pattern making.
So, to conclude, I have worked in the industry for 6 years, Andymy Designs became real 6 years ago, and I am here to stay. For me, the beginning is now!
What are your design influences when it comes to designing for fashion dolls?
My influences are all from all over. I do get inspired by bigger names in the fashion industry, but I think that the fabric is the thing which defines the final product. I salvage lots of fabrics from the factory that will fit the scale of the doll. After, I think what could work to make out of them: trousers, dress, tops, and coats. Then I move on to the sketching, where I combine elements I like with elements that are popular, maintaining my personal style in the garment. Make changes to the first idea, so, if at first I wanted to make pants, now I am making a top. Or I am making both.
In the end, your own style matters, people will fall in line as long as you bring them good quality pieces and creative designs.
Tell us about your collection and what you enjoy about the hobby?
I collect Dolls that resonates with me. On the top are the dolls from the Nu.face line from Integrity Toys Second are the FR2 line but here I am picky. I have to mention that most of my dolls are naked on the shelves because I like to have my models up and ready for the camera. I also collect Poppy Parker, but only the special W Club members’ ones. I keep them on the shelves dressed and beautiful! In conclusion, I am a big Integrity Toys FAN and I still hope that one day I will end up working with them!
Not every doll fits with my style, so every time I buy something new I check her vibe. To see if she will go well with what I am making, To see if I like the screening, the hair and final the accessories – shoes especially. Although I can make fashion I die inside because I cannot make shoes yet! I need to learn some 3D but I honestly lack the time to invest in learning this. However, there will be a special Luna doll donation for the Charity Auction and I truly hope you guys will like her!
I love dolls, and this hobby for me is an opportunity to showcase myself as an artist. I love collectors and I am happy I made some true best friends through doll collecting. I Love you all!
How did you become involved with the LFDF?
Ask SIMON! He is the one that brought me into this. If someone is to blame he is the one (pointing finger at Simon)!
But really now, Simon was the one that asked me for help. I still have no idea why, but I guess I am doing something right since he is satisfied with everything I have done for the Festival so far.
He initially asked me to help with a doll… I ended up helping more because I love what I do. And London will be a great convention. Wait till you guys see what is coming your way!
Can you tell us anything about the pieces you have designed for the Festival? (No spoilers please LOL!)
Well, how can I say things without spoiling everything!… Let’s see …. I made…. Nope, can’t tell you that. There will be some unique things, they will be inspired by the great theme of Alice in Wonderland, I did them with love, and it will scream ANDYMY DESIGNS. And all these in the know are loving them. So I hope the guests will love them too.
Finally, why should collectors come to the festival?
THIS WILL BE AN AMAZING FESTIVAL! You will be able to meet new people, new collectors, reconnect with other collectors, see your friends, and know your doll friend that you have only been chatting with via social media. You will get dolls, discover new dolls, share your knowledge, share your creations, share your dolls. IT WILL BE AMAZING! All the thanks to the team that made this festival possible. I am looking forward to seeing you in LONDON!
Thank you, Andy, for taking the time to taking part in this interview and for all the hours of hard work you are putting into OOAK centrepiece dolls. I can’t wait to see the reactions when all is revealed on the 30th June!
